Discovering Southern France Aboard Avalon Poetry II: Arles to Lyon

There’s something effortlessly magical about traveling by river, and our journey aboard the Avalon Waterways Poetry II from Arles to Lyon was nothing short of enchanting. Over the course of eight days, we glided through the heart of Provence and Burgundy, soaking in scenic views, charming villages, and centuries of history—all with the comfort and elegance Avalon is known for.

Day 1: Embarkation in Arles – The Soul of Provence

We boarded in Arles, a town that whispers the stories of Van Gogh, Roman gladiators, and Provençal charm. Our Panorama Suite gave us wall-to-wall, floor-to-ceiling views of the Rhône, and it felt like a dream to watch the river slowly roll by from the comfort of our bed.

That evening, we met our Cruise Director and enjoyed a delicious welcome dinner as the sun set over the river.

Day 2: Arles & Les Baux-de-Provence – Roman Relics and Olive Oil Riches

Our first full day began with a scenic excursion to Les Baux-de-Provence, a hilltop village that feels like a medieval time capsule tucked into the Alpilles mountains. Narrow stone alleys, breathtaking views, and ancient ruins set the scene—but the highlight was our olive oil tasting.

We visited a local olive mill, where we learned about the traditional and modern methods of olive oil production. Tasting the region’s award-winning oils—from peppery and robust to smooth and buttery—was a flavorful experience that connected us deeply to the land.

In the afternoon, we returned to Arles, where Roman history came alive. We toured the amphitheater, admired the ancient forum, and wandered streets that Van Gogh once painted. The Provençal light, the scent of lavender in the air, and the mix of history and nature made this day truly unforgettable.

Day 3: Avignon – The City of Popes by Day and Night

We began the day in Avignon, once home to seven popes and still crowned by the towering Palais des Papes. A guided morning tour took us through this massive Gothic palace, followed by time to stroll the charming streets. In the afternoon, we ventured out to Châteauneuf-du-Pape for a wine tasting in one of France’s most prestigious wine regions.

But the real magic happened in the evening.

Instead of dining on board, we joined fellow travel advisors for an off-ship dinner at Pinocchio’s in Arles—a cozy, relaxed spot with great food and even better company. Sharing stories over fresh pasta and local wine made for such a fun and memorable experience.

After dinner, we capped the night with a spontaneous ride on the Ferris wheel, which offered breathtaking views of the Palace of the Popes all lit up. Seeing the city sparkle from above, with the Rhône River glistening nearby, was a perfect way to end the day—romantic, peaceful, and uniquely Avignon.

Day 4: Viviers – Quiet Charms and Cobblestone Alleys

Viviers was a lovely surprise. This medieval town was like a storybook—narrow lanes, ancient homes, and a peaceful cathedral perched above the city. The highlight? A candlelight concert inside Saint Vincent Cathedral, arranged by Avalon. It was an intimate and moving experience we won’t forget.

Day 5: Tournon and Tain l’Hermitage – Vineyards and Views

As we cruised into Tournon, vineyards crept right up to the riverbanks. We took a scenic train ride through Hermitage Hill, followed by a tasting of some truly world-class Syrah wines. Back on board, the ship’s lounge was the perfect place to relax with a glass of wine and watch the sunset.

We started our day in Vienne, a city steeped in Roman history. A guided morning walk took us through highlights like the impressive Temple of Augustus & Livia, the Roman Theater, and the winding streets of the old town. We climbed up to the panoramic Mont Pipet viewpoint, which gave us sweeping views of the Rhône River and the city below—well worth the steps!

After enjoying a leisurely lunch on board, we set off by coach into the scenic countryside of the Beaujolais wine region. The rolling hills, dotted with golden vines and rustic villages, looked like a painting. We visited a local Beaujolais winery, where we learned about the unique Gamay grape and sampled a selection of fresh, fruit-forward wines. The tasting was paired with stories from the winemaker and, of course, a few delicious bites of local cheese and charcuterie.

It was a wonderful balance of culture and countryside, and a great way to round out a day full of discovery and flavor.
